Pay Grade:              AUX:6 ($21.60- $30.46) (Depends on Years of Experience)

Primary Purpose:

 

Support transportation operations by providing safe, efficient and quality service including but not limited to diagnosing, maintenance and repairing school buses, white fleet, and other equipment as directed, under minimal supervision.

 

Qualifications:

 

        Education/Certification: 

  • High School Diploma or GED

  • Associate degree in auto repair and/or ASE School Bus Technician Certificate(s), or Texas Association of School Bus Technicians Certificate(s) or willingness to obtain.
  • Certified or certifiable as a Texas School Bus Driver

  • Hold or obtain a CDL, Class “B” minimum with a “P” & “S” Endorsement

       Special Knowledge/Skills:

  • Ability to exercise judgment in decision making
  • Strong organizational, communication and interpersonal skills
  • Knowledge of school district organization and operations (preferred)
  • Knowledge of diesel and gasoline engine maintenance and repair
  • Ability to use computerized diagnostic equipment and tools
  • Experience working with computers and windows operating systems
  • Ability to lift equipment and tools involved in gasoline and diesel vehicle repair
  • Must pass Annual State of Texas School Bus Driver Physicals
  • Must pass All Federal DOT Drug and Alcohol Test

 

        Experience: 

  • Two years of experience in the student transportation environment

     

    Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the administration may find appropriate and acceptable.

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

 

        Mechanical Responsibilities  

  • Analyze, diagnose failures and repair all district owned vehicles.
  • Perform Annual School Bus Inspections and Bi Annual Inspections of white fleet.
  • Perform major technical repairs and over-hauls of engines, chassis & drivetrain.
  • Perform preventive maintenance check and repair needed items.
  • Perform necessary repairs listed on Vehicle Work Order Forms.
  • Document all repair work on maintenance work order sheet.
  • Assist other mechanics with vehicle repairs as needed.
  • Perform road calls and on road repairs as assigned.
  • Maintain a clean, orderly and safe work environment.
  • Be adaptable and flexible in acceptance of changes and techniques and procedures.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

       Departmental Improvement

  • Assess and respond to needs related to job responsibilities.
  • Assist with establishing and maintaining an efficient and effective Vehicle Maintenance Program
  • Assist the Chief Mechanic with the recommendation of sound policies directed toward program improvements.

       Transportation Management Software

  • Operate the fleet maintenance software program enhancing the departments’ operational efficiency.

Professional Growth and Development

  • Take the initiative to develop needed professional skills appropriate to job assignment.

Department/Community Relations

  • Articulate the district’s mission and goals in the area of transportation to the community and solicit its support in realizing the mission.
  • Assist the Director and Chief Mechanic with Transportation functions & other duties as assigned.

 

Working Conditions:

 

Mental Demands:

  • Ability to communicate effectively (verbal and written).
  • Interpret policy, procedures and data.
  • Maintain emotional control under stress.

Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:

  • Frequent district-wide travel.
  • Prolonged and irregular hours.
  • Drive or monitor a school bus in order to cover all routes.
  • Pick up parts from various vendors as needed.
  • Frequent use of all equipment in an office setting.
  • Requires performing tasks standing, walking, bending, kneeling.
  • Work positions include climbing, kneeling, squatting, lifting and extended reaching above head and in front of body.
  • Requires working inside and outside in all temperatures & climatic conditions.
  • Requires climbing stairs.
  • Operates all district vehicles.
