Primary Purpose:

Responsible for assisting the principal to provide the instruction and administrative leadership necessary for addressing student achievement and overall school effectiveness.

 

Qualifications:

Education/Certification:

Master’s degree

Texas principal or other appropriate Texas certificate

Certified T-TESS appraiser

 

Special Knowledge/Skills:

Knowledge and skills relative to traditional and new pedagogical theories, applications, and processes which relate to effective teaching across the disciplines

Knowledge in effective teaching strategies, peer coaching and mentoring skills

Ability to evaluate instructional program and teaching effectiveness

Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills

 

Experience:

Five years experience as a classroom teacher

Three years in a leadership role

 

Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the administration may find appropriate and acceptable.

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

Instructional Management

  1. Participate in development and evaluation of educational programs.
  2. Affect instructional change by modeling effective teaching in the classroom and working directly with teachers.
  3. Mentor teachers (areas of focus: effective teaching methods, instructional planning and organization, use of creative resources in literature/technology, classroom management, etc.)
  4. Model and train teachers in test data analysis, assessment of student needs, organization of curriculum and instructional materials, planning daily instruction and developing prescriptions for student learning.
  5. Encourage and support development of innovative instructional programs, helping teachers pilot such efforts when appropriate.
  6. Provide campus training for teachers and organize campus staff in-service.
  7. Provide documentation which may include: Data analysis on student achievement and areas of need using standardized and criterion-referenced tests, college and career readiness data, grade distribution data analysis, and teacher-made tests (charts, graphs, list of targeted students, etc.). Provide description of effective teaching strategies to be utilized in the classroom by specific teachers and departments. 
  1. Work closely with department chairpersons and/or team leaders to help ensure instructional practices meet the academic needs of the students.
  2. Provide/facilitate/plan instructional focus and new learning for the Professional Learning Community (PLC) on the campus.
  3. Guide, mentor and lead campus Instructional Interventionists in modeling and verifying curriculum and quality instruction.
  4. Guide and assist with the implementation of the dual credit program.
  5. Meet with district administration to plan and implement academic and college readiness support and intervention.
  6. Assist with the development and implementation of curriculum.

  3. Communicate effectively with students and staff.

Personnel Management

  1. Observe employee performance, record observations, and conduct evaluation conferences. Serve as second appraiser for designated teacher appraisal system.
  2. Assist principal in interviewing and selecting new staff.

Administration and Fiscal/Facilities Management

  1. Supervise operations in principal’s absence.
  2. Help plan daily school activities by participating in the development of class schedules, teacher assignments, and extracurricular activity schedules.
  3. Work with department heads and faculty to compile annual budget requests based on documented program needs.
  4. Comply with federal and state laws, State Board of Education rule, and board policy.

Professional Growth and Development

  1. Participate in professional development to improve skills related to job assignment.

School/Community Relations

  1. Articulate the school’s mission to community and solicit its support in realizing mission.
  2. Demonstrate awareness of school-community needs and initiate activities to meet those needs.
  3. Use appropriate and effective techniques to encourage community and parent involvement.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  1. Share supervisory responsibility for professional staff with school principal.
  2. Supervise teachers, custodians, paraprofessionals, clerical personnel and others as assigned.

Working Conditions:

Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:

  1. Maintain emotional control under stress. Work with frequent interruptions.
  2. Occasional district-wide travel; occasional prolonged and irregular hours.
  3. Perform all other duties assigned by the principal.
