Primary Purpose:
The Dispatcher is responsible for coordinating assignments and schedules of bus driver routes and vehicles to ensure safe, efficient, and economical transportation services. Record absentee calls and assign substitutes. Answer telephones & 2-Way Radio’s in an effort to communicate information to the community and department staff to ensure safe, efficient, and economical transportation services.
Qualifications:
Education/Certification:
- High School Diploma or GED
- Certified or certifiable as a Texas School Bus Driver (preferred)
- Hold or obtain a CDL, class B minimum with a “P” & “S” Endorsement (preferred)
- Must pass Annual State of Texas School Bus Driver Physicals (preferred)
- Must pass ALL Federal DOT Drug and Alcohol Test
Special Knowledge/Skills:
- Proficient typing, word processing, computer and file maintenance skills
- Strong organization, communication and interpersonal skills
- Knowledge of school district organization and operations
- Ability to receive and give verbal instructions clearly and effectively
- Ability to multi-task
- Ability to maintain customer-oriented attitude and emotional control under stress
- Proficient map reading skills
- Bilingual Preferred
Experience:
Two years of experience as a school bus driver the public education environment (preferred)
Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the administration may find appropriate and acceptable.
Major Responsibilities and Duties:
- This position is responsible for opening in the morning and closing in the afternoon, which requires working a split shift during am and pm route times with a break during the middle of the day.
- Coordinate assignments of bus drivers, bus routes, vehicles, and substitutes for morning, mid-day and afternoon shifts.
- Assist with or coordinate extracurricular transportation.
- Dispatch drivers and vehicles and communicate with them using a telephone and two-way radio.
- Communicate with parents and school personnel regarding bus schedules
- Maintain good public relations with students and school personnel
- Assist with emergency situations
- Maintain all required physical and computerized logs, worksheets, files, and reports related to dispatch operations.
- Perform bus driving duties when required.
- Demonstrate proper maintenance, care, storage and use of equipment and materials.
- Maintain daily fleet mileage for the department for state reporting purposes.
- Compile and prepare correspondence, forms and reports for the department as needed.
- Answer all incoming calls, take reliable messages & route calls to the appropriate staff.
- Maintain confidentiality of information for the transportation department.
- Operate Dispatch 2-Way Radio as primary communication link between community, transportation office and buses.
- Perform all other duties as assigned.

- Work positions include climbing (<1%), kneeling (15%), squatting (10%) and extended reaching above head and in front of body (10%).
- Requires working inside and outside in all temperatures & climatic conditions (10%).
- Requires climbing school bus steps (10%).
