JOB TITLE: School Bus Routing Clerk WAGE/HOUR STATUS: Non-exempt
REPORTS TO: Director of Transportation PAY GRADE: Clerical 3 ($27,721 - $40,291) (Depends on Years of Experience)

PRIMARY PURPOSE:
Build and maintain School Bus Routes for all students of the district that will afford a safe and efficient transportation system.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education/Certification:
- High School Diploma or GED
- Certified or certifiable as a Texas School Bus Driver
- Hold or obtain a CDL, class B minimum with a “P” & “S” Endorsement
Special Knowledge/Skills:
- Ability to exercise judgement in decision making
- Strong organizational, communication and interpersonal skills
- Knowledge of school district organization and operations (preferred)
- Knowledge of transportation routing software (preferred)
- Proficient skills in typing, word processing, and filing
Experience:
Two years of experience in the student transportation environment preferred

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
Departmental Climate
- Demonstrate dependability by being punctual and present at work unless for good cause.
- Deal sensitively and fairly with persons from diverse cultural backgrounds.
- Provide an effective communication channel between parents, schools and other transportation staff.
- Coordinate with the director and assistant director of any routes requiring attention.
- Assist in keeping the drivers updated of any changes in routes or procedures.
- Train new bus drivers or assist retraining bus drivers as needed.
- Demonstrate behavior that is positive, professional, ethical and responsible and serve as a role model for all Transportation Department personnel.
- Exhibit reliability by completing work as assigned by meeting project time lines.
Departmental Improvement
- Assess and respond to needs related to job responsibilities.
- Assist the Director with the recommendation of sound policies directed toward program improvements.
Transportation Management Software
- Generate and print route sheets.
- Operate and maintain the bus routing program to its maximum potential enhancing the departments’ operational efficiency.
Clerical Responsibilities
- Assist in the preparation of necessary data needed for new student registrations.
- Document and record all student data information as information changes.
- Prepare necessary reports for the director as needed.
- Assist with incoming calls, take reliable messages & route calls to the appropriate staff.
Professional Growth and Development
- Take the initiative to develop needed professional skills appropriate to job assignment.
- Belong to and take an active role in professional organizations pertaining to the position.
Department/Community Relations
- Articulate the district’s mission and goals in the area of transportation to the community and solicit its support in realizing the mission.
- Work closely with all campuses and departments to build a strong “team work” style relationship.
- Assist the Director with Transportation functions & other duties as assigned.

Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:
- Frequent district-wide travel (50%).
- Occasional prolonged and irregular hours (25%).
- Drive or monitor a school bus in order to cover all routes (25%).
- Frequent use of all equipment in an office setting (90%).
- Requires performing tasks standing (25%), walking (30%), bending (25%), kneeling (25%).
- Work positions include climbing (20%), kneeling (25%), squatting (25%) and extended reaching above head and in front of body (15%).
- Requires working inside and outside in all temperatures & climatic conditions (100%).
- Requires climbing stairs (50%).
- Operates all district vehicles (50%).
